강타 韓 최고 인기가수상…‘2002 MTV…’서 수상

강타가 한국을 대표하는 최고 인기가수로 뽑혔다．강타는 2일 오후 7시(한국시간 오후 6시) 아시아 각국 유명 가수들이 대거 참가한 가운데 싱가포르 인도어 스타디움(Indoor Stadium)에서 열린 ‘2002 MTV 아시아 어워드’에서 ‘한국 최고 인기가수상’을 수상하는 영예를 안았다．

이번 수상은 국내 네티즌들은 물론 중국 일본 대만 홍콩 말레이시아 인도네시아 필리핀 싱가포르 등 아시아 13개국 음악 팬들이 투표에 참가한 결과로 아시아 전역의 인기를 반영한 것. 강타는 “앞으로 재즈가 바탕이 되는 다양한 음악을 시도하고 싶다”고 수상 소감을 밝혔다．

한편 국내 가수들을 대표해 강타와 함께 ‘2002 MTV 아시아 어워드’ 행사에 참가한 god는 허리 부상을 당한 멤버 박준형이 지팡이를 짚고 무대에 올라 ‘니가 있어야 할 곳’을 부르는 등 열창의 축하 무대를 선보여 7,000여 관중으로부터 박수 갈채를 받았다．

강타, MTV아시아어워드 최고인기상 수상

가수 강타가 2일 밤 싱가포르 SIS에서 열린 ‘MTV 아시아 어워드’에서 ‘한국 최고인기가수상(Favorite Artist-Korea)’을 수상했다.

전 세계 음반관계자와 음악팬 2만여명이 몰린 이날 시상식에서 강타는 최고인기가수상을 수상했고,국가별로 한 팀씩만 벌인 공연무대는 god가 선보였다.god 신화 핑클 유승준이 강타와 함께 한국 최고인기가수부문 후보에 올랐고,강타와 god가 대표로 시상식에 참석했다.

이날 행사에서는 웨스트라이프(Westlife),엠투엠(M2M),하마사키 아유미,장쯔이 등 세계적인 스타가 대거 몰려 볼거리가 넘치는 무대가 펼쳐졌다.

한편 지난달 31일 싱가포르에 도착한 강타는 현지 보도진과 팬들의 열광적인 반응에 “HOT의 인지도가 높은 건 알았지만 기대 이상의 반응을 보여줘 무척 놀랐다”고 말했다.

맨디무어와 로넌 키팅의 사회로 진행된 본 시상식에서 MTV온라인 페이지와 오프라인을 통해서 진행된 투표 결과, 한국을 대표하는 아티스트로 "강타가"선정되었습니다. 또한 남자 아티스트 부분에선 리키 마틴이, 여자 아티스트 부분에선 브리트니 스피어스가, 팝부분에서는 웨스트 라이프가 락분야에서는 본 조비가 선정되었습니다.

Stars shine at first Asian MTV awards

SINGAPORE -- Asia has paid tribute to its home-grown talent at the inaugural MTV Asia Awards 2002, which brought together a glittering array of stars from East and West.

Pop stars, boy bands, wrestlers, circus performers and just a few meters of red carpet were all part of the first pan-Asian music awards show, broadcast to over 150 million homes across Asia.

Sexy all-girl London-based pop string quartet Bond kicked off the awards at Singapore's Indoor Stadium on Saturday night with a upbeat, pumping set.

The crowd of around 7,000 fans then lapped up live performances from Irish boyband Westlife, Latin hearthrob Enrique Iglesias, Norwegian duo M2M and R&B artist Pink.

Japanese pop starlet Ayumi Hamasaki, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actress Zhang Ziyi, and fashion designer Donatella Versace also ratcheted up the show's star factor.

The star-studded event was hosted by ex-Boyzone front man Ronan Keating and American pop princess Mandy Moore.

Organizers gave out "favorite act" awards to 11 Asian countries, and handed out several trophies for international performers.

Music artists say they hope the Asian awards -- compiled from 13 million paper and e-mail ballots -- will not only showcase the region's "hot pop acts," but also "cross-pollinate" musical taste.

Winners

Singer Regine Velasquez walked away with the first award for the night as the Philippines' Favorite Music Artist. Indonesia picked five-man band PADI as their choice while Malaysia opted for petite songbird Siti Nurhaliza.

"Winning this award is not only motivation for me to better myself but (an opportunity) to venture further into the region," Siti said in Malay at a post-award news conference.

Thailand picked local rock band Pru while Singapore's choice was gamine Stefanie Sun.

But even the winners felt it was not always easy being Asian musicians.

"Asian artists try to emulate the West. When they try to do it, they don't do it as well as the Western artists," Pru band member Suki told Reuters reporters.

Hong Kong female singer Sammi Cheng beat a host of well-known nominees such as Andy Lau and Jackie Cheung to clinch the trophy. But the flamboyant canto-pop star had to give the ceremony a miss because of a cold.

Taiwan picked pop singer Chang Hui Mei, popularly known as A-Mei, to win the prize while singer Kang Ta from South Korea bounced on stage to grab his cube-like trophy.

India's top pop artist was Shaan while duo Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan came in as the sub-continent's favorite film artist.

Hong Kong martial arts star Jacky Chan, well-loved for his dare-devil stunts, won the Inspiration Award but had a stand-in receive his trophy.

MTV is a round-the clock music television network owned by U.S. media giant Viacom.

Global music sales in 2000 were worth $37 billion, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Industry sources have told Reuters that Asia's music sales, excluding Japan, have been steady at $2.2 billion per year in the last two years.

That leaves plenty of room for growth as music lovers switch from cassette tapes to higher-value CDs and rampant piracy is put under increasing pressure, analysts have said.

Some of the international awards showed that young people's musical tastes are universal -- Britney Spears and Ricky Martin clinched the favorite female and male artist awards.
